Johannesburg - Skirmishes between police and students continued throughout the day at Wits University on Tuesday.

Police fired stun grenades and rubber bullets at students earlier in the day after protesters pelted stones at campus security guards stationed outside the Great Hall.

Students dispersed, but continued to throw stones at police who were gathered in small groups.

Meanwhile, classes continued over the sounds of rubber bullets on campus.

Some students and workers were sprayed by water cannons when they protested against police using rubber bullets on students.

Emotional workers who are sympathetic to the student protests stripped to their underwear in protest against the police's actions.

Wits spokesperson Shirona Patel had earlier announced that one student had been arrested after a group attempted to disrupt classes.

Some clergymen were also at the scene in support of the students.

Student leader Busisiwe Seabe said they were prepared to be militant to advance their cause.
