Pietermaritzburg - A local man is adamant that he saw a small crocodile swimming in the Duzi river on Friday.

Douglas Boyd said he was not trying to pull an April fool’s prank when he contacted the Witness about his crocodile encounter.

Boyd said he was walking along Chief Albert Luthuli (formerly Commercial) road to a garage at lunch-time when he spotted the little crocodile floating in the water.

Boyd said he is convinced the creature he saw was a crocodile and not a water monitor (leguaan).

“I was amazed to see it while I was crossing the bridge over the Duzi.

“I stopped and gazed at it to ensure I was really seeing what I thought it was. It eventually disappeared and I waited to see if it would surface again but that was the last time I saw it,” he said.

It is not unheard of for crocodiles to be found in rivers inland or even in farm dams in KZN.

In past years the organisers of the Dusi Canoe Marathon have issued warnings to canoeists to be on the lookout for crocodiles which were spotted along the route.
