Cape Town - Smoking is believed to be the cause of a blaze which engulfed a property in Kuils River in the early hours of Wednesday morning, resulting in the death of a man and a girl.

City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson Liezl Moodie said the fire in Abby Street, Camelot broke out at 01:35. The house, garage, two cars, and a Wendy house were alight.

Three fire engines, a rescue vehicle, and a water tanker were sent to the scene.

The 29-year-old man who lived in the Wendy house died and his daughter, who lived in the main house, died in hospital later.

“A female minor aged 10 was removed from the house, suffering from smoke inhalation. CPR was initiated and successful, but she later died at Eerste River Hospital.”

Two women, aged 23 and 50, and a seven-year-old boy were treated for smoke inhalation and taken to Tygerberg Hospital.

“The probable cause of the fire was smoking,” Moodie said.

The kitchen, lounge and a bedroom of the house were damaged in the blaze.
