WATCH: Forensic experts examine truck used in Bastille Day killings

2016-07-15 10:11

At least 84 people have been killed after a truck zig-zagged through crowds of people celebrating Bastille Day in the southern French city of Nice, in an alleged terror attack. The driver was shot dead and forensic experts are now examining the vehicle. Watch. WATCH

Johannesburg - A South African family bought sweets from a street store in Nice, France just minutes before a truck came barrelling through during Bastille Day celebrations on Thursday killing at least 84 people.

Henri Meistre posted on Facebook that he and his family are okay after the incident.

“In Nice..... All of us ok...we stood just to the left of where the truck came to a standstill. The little street store in the pics shown on the news stations is where we bought some sweets a few minutes earlier...attached some photos of all of us in the exact spot minutes earlier. Mayhem broke out and we all just ran away from the Promenade des Anglaise.”

According to his account, Meistre hails from Johannesburg and attended Northcliff High School.

News24 is still waiting for a response from Meistre.

The South African government earlier condemned the "cowardly terrorist attacks".

President Jacob Zuma released a statement via the Department of International Relations and Co-operation (Dirco) on Friday morning in which he extended  heartfelt condolences to French President Francois Hollande‚ the government and the people of France‚ in particular the families of the deceased and injured “on behalf of the government and the people of South Africa”.
