Pietermaritzburg - KwaZulu-Natal resident Sarah van Heerden will cycle over five days across 1 000 km to raise funds for unwanted animals.

She will take on the epic ride with 17 other entrants to raise funds for the Kloof and Highway SPCA, which deals with a greater number of abandoned and unwanted animals over the holiday season.

Outreach programme officer Lisa Gadd said: “We are always looking for fresh, new, and innovative ways to raise funds for our SPCA. As fund-raising becomes more and more difficult we have to think of ways to reach out to our supporters and get them involved in our SPCA and the crucial work in animal welfare that we do.”

Operations manager at the Kloof and Highway SPCA Sarah van Heerden said: “There are 17 entrants and it is a race so you do not get to help each other. It is who gets to Wellington in the Cape first. This is a huge challenge for me, but I am willing to give it my all to raise the money for the animals in our care. Animals are such a huge part of my life and I will not let them down.”

Van Heerden’s entry was sponsored by an engineering company. “I will be paying the bill for all the extras. My goal is to raise as much money for the animals as I can.”

Van Heerden has been working for the Kloof and Highway SPCA as an employee for three years. Prior to that she volunteered for a few years.

“I could not think of doing anything else at this stage. There is nothing that beats the feeling of making a difference in an animal’s life no matter how big or how small. The sadness can be great, but the rewards absolutely amazing.

“People can contact me prior to the event because during the event I will be using my phone only in case of emergencies,” said Van Heerden.

Her e-mail address is operations@kloofspca.co.za.

“You can never give enough attention to animals — sadly they come far behind many other charities. The animals rely on us 365 days of the year. Animals have no voice to speak for themselves and we need to be their voice. Every donation, no matter how small, will make a huge difference,” she said.
