Johannesburg - For the past 12 years, St Stithians' pupils Mishaal and Awais Majeed have moved from one grade to the next together and, on Wednesday, cleared the final hurdle with 17 distinctions between them.

Awais got 9 A's, one more than his sister. Their results were not a combined effort. They studied independently, but would ask each other if they need to clarify something.

"I don't think we studied together much. She was her own person and I was my own person. We hardly communicated during our study sessions because each person works at their own pace," Awais said.

Mishaal was the only person to study Urdu, Pakistan's national language, on the girls campus, while Awais was the only one to do so on the boys campus. It was a self-study subject with an external examiner.

The twins both got distinctions in the subject. The soft-spoken Awais was humble about his achievement. He wanted to study actuarial science next year, but was not yet sure at which university. Mishaal had been accepted at 3 universities. Awais said that after sharing schools their entire lives, he and his sister would likely go to different universities.
