Pietermaritzburg - Pietermaritzburg (Loop Street) police are investigating a case of assault involving a student that happened at the Victoria Shopping Centre.

During a confrontation that went wrong, a teenage boy from Hayfields was hospitalised after being stabbed by a student from Creative Arts College.

A source at the college, who asked not to be identified, said: “We were standing outside the campus property waiting to go in for our exams when this teenage boy walked up to us and started confronting one of our students [the suspect].

“The confrontation got out of hand and the two started fighting and the teenage boy was stabbed by the student,” said the source.

The property manager of Victoria Centre, Rhienier Duplooy, confirmed the incident had occurred but said he could not provide any further information.

Creative Arts manager Pravashee Pillay said: “The altercation that took place [yesterday] morning was an external issue, that occurred outside in the centre, which is the responsibility of the centre security and centre management. The incident is being investigated by the Loop Street police. The student involved in this will not be allowed to continue with his exams.”

Police spokesperson Mthokozisi Ngobese said: “The student has been arrested. He is facing charges of assault with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm.”

The suspect is expected to appear today in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court.
