Cape Town – A student who was sleeping in her room at the Nassau Student Hostel in Stellenbosch woke up to a strange man laying down next to her on her bed. He pulled out a knife, took his clothes off and raped her.

After he had raped her and threatened to kill her if she made a noise; he took her computer and cellphone and walked out the front door of the private student residence in Plein Street.

The incident happened just after 04:00 on August 20.

"The police have found that the perpetrator did not gain access through a window. Our security was not breached," Nassau spokesperson Elsje Schoeman told Netwerk24

She said the residence used a fingerprint access system.

"All first-floor windows have bars and there are security cameras in the residence and at the front door. We have handed the relevant recordings over to the police."

Following the incident, a security guard has been guarding the front door, which is the only entrance to the building.

The student who was raped is still receiving counselling.

No arrests have been made in connection with the incident yet.
