Durban – A 29-year-old suspect has been arrested for allegedly killing a police officer and robbing him of his service pistol in Folweni, south of Durban last month, the Hawks in KwaZulu-Natal said on Friday.

The suspect appeared at the Nsimbini Magistrate's Court on Thursday for the murder and robbery of Constable Joseph Mondli Chiliza, 38, on February 28. He was remanded in custody and his case was postponed to March 30 for a bail application.

He was arrested on Wednesday at his residence by Hawks members attached to the Durban organised crime unit in conjunction with police officers from King Shaka International Airport, where Chiliza was stationed, said Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo.

Chiliza was on his way to work at about 04:00 on the morning he was murdered. While on his way to the bus stop, he was accosted by unknown suspects and shot. He sustained gunshot wounds to the head, neck and chest. His body was found by passers-by, dumped on an embankment near the bus stop he was headed to.

A case of murder and armed robbery was reported at Folweni police station and the matter was referred to the Hawks for intensive investigation, said Mhlongo.

Police had initially said another suspect, 22, had been arrested for Chiliza's murder but Mhlongo told News24 that only one suspect has been charged for Chiliza's murder and robbery.
