Durban - A man was killed in what police describe as an “ambush” of tactical police officers in Bergville in central KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday.

Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbhele said members of the Durban Tactical Response Team embarked on a late-night raid, following a trail of information concerning illegal firearms in the Moyeni area of Upper Tugela in Bergville.

“The members proceeded to the area and were ambushed by a group of armed men. A shootout ensued leading to one of the attackers being fatally wounded,” she said.

“A police officer as well as the member of public sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to nearby hospital for medical treatment,” she added.

Mbhele said a pistol with four live rounds of ammunition, as well as several spent cartridges, were recovered at the scene.

Two counts of attempted murder were opened at Upper Tugela SAPS for further investigation.
