Durban - A suspected business robber was shot and killed in a dramatic exchange of fire with police officers in Winterton in central KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said that security guards at a business complex had been held up by two armed men in the early hours of the morning.

"The two suspects approached the centre, where they held up the security guards. They assaulted one of the guards, while the other managed to escape and alert police to the robbery," he said.

"Winterton police rushed out to the scene and were met with the two suspects exiting the premises, firearms in hand.

"The suspects fired shots at the police and there was an exchange of gunfire. One of the suspects was subsequently shot dead, while the other fled into the nearby bushes," Zwane added.

He said that officers seized an unlicensed firearm, which was found on the deceased suspect, as well as a Mercedes-Benz which was used in the robbery.

"Further investigation revealed that the vehicle was hijacked in Malvern during October 2015. A search for the second suspect is still underway."
