Cape Town - Dutch courage may have been behind an alleged drunk driver’s decision to charge straight at Metro Police officers after attempting to evade arrest on Sunday.

In what the City of Cape Town described as a "Hollywood-style chase", a man was arrested after driving off from a vehicle checkpoint.

The motorist sped off, disobeying road signs along the way, council said in a statement.

Officers followed and attempted to block his vehicle on Klipfontein Road, but the driver charged straight at them.

One of the officers opened fire at the vehicle’s tyres, and it collided with another vehicle.

The driver was arrested and charged with drunk driving, reckless or negligent driving, fleeing from lawful custody, and resisting arrest.

Mayoral committee member for safety and security, JP Smith, said such behaviour was becoming far too common.

"It frustrates me no end how so many drivers are willing to put their own lives and the lives of others at risk by getting behind the wheel drunk and then having the temerity to think they can get away from law enforcement officers," he said.

"As a society, we need to do some serious introspection about our relationship with alcohol, but also law enforcement. Our residents need to start taking responsibility for their actions.

"This goes for the person who drives drunk, but also the drinking buddies and relatives who allow people to drive drunk in the first place."
