Pietermaritzburg - The city’s executive committee (Exco) last week agreed that suspended municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi could attend a conference in Australia in May this year.

The Institute for Local Government Management (iLGM), of which Nkosi is the president, was invited to attend the Local Government Professionals Australia (LPGA) congress and business expo. However since the suspension of Nkosi as Msunduzi’s municipal manager, iLGM released a statement confirming that he would remain their president until the investigation against him is concluded.

Because Nkosi was suspended on full pay and benefits, council is entitled to fund his trip to Australia and any other travel he would undertake as a representative of the iLGM.

The LPGA will cover the cost of registration and up to three nights’ accommodation. The cost for his visa application, subsistence and travel, airfares and additional accommodation will be covered by Msunduzi municipality. This amounts to more than R66 000.

DA councillor Bill Lambert said that he hoped that when Nkosi returned from the congress he would be able to give a “personal” account of what he learnt.
