Cape Town – A special task team has tracked down five of the nine awaiting-trial prisoners who escaped from Glen Grey police station, Eastern Cape police said on Tuesday.

The men escaped on Friday and most were caught in the area on Sunday, said Lieutenant Namhla Mdleleni.

They are Mpho Bhokisi, 19, Athenkosi Ncinane, 22, Vuyolwethu Fisani, 24, Bongile Jaxa, 30, and Bongani Kanzi, 30.

When they appeared in court on Monday, escaping from lawful custody was added to the list of serious crimes they had already been charged with.

The search for the remaining four prisoners continued.

Mdleleni said last week that the group asked for drinking water from the officer on duty at the police station. When he arrived they overpowered him, locked him in the cells, and escaped.

Local residents were warned not to try and apprehend them as they were considered dangerous. Glen Grey police were investigating the incident.

Mdleleni said anyone who knew the whereabouts of the suspects should call the nearest police station or Warrant Officer Zamikhaya Mlahleki on 082-441-8350.
