A Prestbury Primary School teacher has been charged with assaulting a Grade 7 pupil.

Both the police and the Education Department have confirmed the incident and the ongoing investigation.

The mother of the 12-year-old pupil was left fuming after her son was allegedly assaulted by a teacher following an alleged confrontation with a classmate.

The mother, who cannot be named to protect the identity of her son, told The Witness that her son was assaulted by a teacher who had walked into the classroom and found her son having an argument with a female pupil.

“The teacher walked in and grabbed my son by the collar, threw him across the classroom and kicked him before dragging him to his class teacher who called us in, before asking the child what had happened,” the mother alleged.

She said she met with the school principal, HOD and the teacher accused with assaulting her son.

The mother said she opened a case with the police and has reported the matter to the KZN Education Department but said she has not received any feedback from either.

Pietermaritzburg police spokesperson Sergeant Mthokozisi Ngobese said the case was transferred to the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS). “The teacher has been charged,” he said.

Education spokesperson Sihle Mlotshwa said the department was aware of the allegations and said corporal punishment was against the law.

“Charges have been preferred against the educator and we are waiting for the date of the hearing,” said Mlotshwa.
