Pietermaritzburg - A 26-year-oldman was arrested at the weekend for allegedly shooting dead a teenaged beggar in Pietermaritzburg.

It is believed the 13-year-old boy had approached a man who was attending mosque in Church Street at around 7 pm on Saturday when the shooting occurred.

An eye witness, who asked not to be named, said she saw the boy approach the man as he was locking his car.

“The boy hangs around [this area] so we know him. He always asks for food or money. I saw him go to the man and within minutes I just heard the gunshots,” the woman said.

The shooter then allegedly ran down the road and into the mosque. “I heard two shots a few minutes after the boy approached the man. I don’t know what happened or if there was an argument. I was shocked because even if the street child was a nuisance, there was no need to pull out a gun,” she said.

Police allegedly entered the Church Street mosque and arrested the man.

“A case of murder is being investigated by Pietermaritzburg SAPS. A 26-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with murder. He will appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court soon,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant Nqobile Gwala.

Gwala said the motive for the killing was unknown at this stage and would be investigated.

Paramedics said the teenager had sustained two gunshot wounds, one to his upper left leg and one to left side of his chest.

“This is what we call a transverse gunshot wound, where the bullet probably penetrated both lungs and the heart,” said ER24 spokesperson and paramedic Andrew Rogers.

It is believed the teenager is well-known in the Sanctuary Road area and is usually seen kneeling or sitting on the road between the Caltex petrol station and the KFC.

Rogers said although the boy was unresponsive, paramedics performed CPR for 45 minutes before declaring him dead.

“We did try our hardest but unfortunately with a gunshot wound like that, it is very unlikely for a person to survive,” he said.
