Cape Town - The man arrested in connection with the attack on two Port Elizabeth students made a brief appearance in the city's court on Wednesday.

His case was postponed to Thursday, for his bail application to start, police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu said.

He may not be identified at present as the police's tracking and tracing unit was still working on catching at least four others involved in the attack.

“The SAPS is satisfied with the progress made thus far in the investigation and recognises the dedication displayed by the two teams tracking the suspects,” said Naidu.

The 18-year-old was arrested in KwaZakhele on Monday, allegedly in possession of the car and other items stolen during the attack on a 21-year-old woman and her friend Thambani Ngwekazi.

Ngwekazi, 28, was on a bursary studying emergency services. He and the woman were hijacked while they were waiting in a gold-coloured VW Golf in North End, Port Elizabeth, to pick up two other students for a night out on Saturday, August 13.

A group of armed men confronted them, forced them into the boot of the car and drove them to a nearby beach.

They shot Ngwekazi in the head in front of the 21-year-old female. They raped and later left her in the city. Ngwekazi's body washed up on the beach.
