Durban - A 9-month-old baby boy from Mt Moriah in Phoenix has been missing since Saturday after his mother's friend "borrowed" him.

Both the baby and the friend have vanished.

Olwethu Gift Nojahi's mother, who asked not to be named, told News24 on Thursday that Mt Moriah residents were helping her search for the baby and her friend Zanele Mchunu, 17.

"What matters most is that we find my baby and the person who took him," she said on Thursday.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said the woman was home when her friend Mchunu came to her house. For now, police are investigating a missing person's docket, she said.

"She asked to borrow her baby since she was going to a mall. She agreed, but her friend and the baby did not return home," Gwala said.

Nojahi was wearing a white vest and a pair of white shorts. Mchunu was wearing a green pair of jeans and a multi-coloured shirt.

Anyone with information of their whereabouts could contact Phoenix police on 031 508 2330 or the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111.
