Pretoria – The State’s argument that Oscar Pistorius killed Reeva Steenkamp during an argument aggravated the pain her father felt, the High Court in Pretoria heard on Wednesday.

“Mr Steenkamp’s pain was compounded as a result of an incorrect case presented by the State. The State’s scenario caused him to believe that there was an argument,” Barry Roux, for Pistorius, told the court during closing arguments.

He said the objective evidence proved that there was no argument, that it could not have been Steenkamp screaming as she was killed, and that Pistorius did not intend to kill her.

“The court rejected this incorrect version,” Roux said.

Barry Steenkamp testified on Tuesday about the pain his daughter’s murder had caused him, to the extent that he jabbed himself repeatedly with his diabetes injection.

Judge Thokozile Masipa is hearing arguments in aggravation and mitigation before sentencing Pistorius for the murder of Steenkamp on February 14, 2013. The Supreme Court of Appeal overturned her verdict of culpable homicide and replaced it one of murder.
