Thousands more homes get electricity, water - minister

Cape Town – Thousands of homes have been connected to the electricity and water systems for the first time between July 2015 and March 2016, the Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs department has said.

Replying to a written parliamentary question from the Democratic Alliance’s Nqaba Bhanga, Minister Des Van Rooyen said an average number of 3 153 homes had been connected to the electricity system for the first time.

During the same period, 2 354 homes were connected to the water system for the first time.

Most of the new electricity connections were in Ekurhuleni, where 1 142 homes were connected.

This was followed by 895 connections in eThekwini and 362 in the City of Cape Town.

The City of Tshwane had the highest number of new water connections at 1 220, followed by Cape Town at 545.
