Durban  Three people have been arrested in Umhlatuzana for alleged involvement in the manufacturing of a drug known as “jelly babies”, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Sunday.

“It is still investigated if this drug has been sold to any schoolchildren,” said Lieutenant Nqobile Gwala.

The three, aged between 27 and 39, were arrested following tip-offs. Police also seized a laptop and gas-powered guns. They would appear on charges of drug possession in the Durban Magistrate’s Court soon, police said.

Gwala could not be reached for further information about the drug.

According to a Police National Legal Database for England and Wales, published by the UK’s Sunday Telegraph newspaper, jelly babies are amphetamine-based drugs. These include crystal methamphetamine (tik).
