Kimberley – Three Northern Cape men have been jailed for defrauding the Northern Cape health department of R1.4m, the Hawks said on Friday.

They did so between June and July 2011, Lieutenant Philani Nkwalase said in a statement.

The transactions were discovered when a company rendering services to the health department queried why it had not been paid.

They used the access codes of department employees who were on leave to gain entry to the department’s system.

With the help of an insider, who has still not been caught, they changed the company’s banking details so that the department’s payments were sent to another account. Two payments, of R882 887 and R556 223, were made into the account in two consecutive days.

The Kimberley Regional Court on Thursday sentenced Selaotse Morata, 33, to in effect 10 years’ jail, Mohlonoa Palo, 33, to 5 years, and Tumelo Palo, 35, to 3 years.

They were arrested on 18 December 2012.

Morata received the money and transferred it to his business and other accounts.  A fourth accused, Macdonald Mothusi Mocumi, 38, died during the course of the trial.
