Cape Town – Three men have been arrested for allegedly shooting and killing off-duty police officer Mziwonke Siwisa while he was on his way to work, the Western Cape Hawks have confirmed.

The constable, stationed at the Sea Border Unit at Table Bay Harbour, was wearing his civilian clothes over his uniform when he was gunned down in Wallacedene, Kraaifontein, in the early hours of Monday morning.

His service pistol was stolen in the process.

The alleged killers, aged 21 to 22, were arrested in Bloekombos, Kraaifontein, on Wednesday, said Hawks spokesperson Captain Lloyd Ramovha.

Officers seized an illegal handgun that had its serial number filed off.

"It is due to be subjected to ballistic tests to determine whether it is linked to other crimes," he said.

Hawks head Lieutenant-General Berning Ntlemeza was pleased with the arrests.

"The claws are out for police killers. We promised that no stone will be left unturned in tracking those responsible for this heinous crime," he said.

"We have maximised resources and continue to mobilise communities to identify and isolate those who have disregard for the rule of law in this country."

The men faced charges of murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm and armed robbery with aggravating circumstances.

They were expected to appear in the Kuils River Magistrate's Court on Monday.
