Pretoria - Three suspected criminals and a policeman were killed in a shootout on the N4 between Mpumalanga and Gauteng on Wednesday, the Hawks said.

The shooting happened just after the Diamond Hill Toll Plaza in the early hours of the morning, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said.

Silverton Flying Squad members pulled over a car with five occupants around 01:45. When the officers approached it they were greeted by a hail of bullets, killing Constable Max Lekalakala, 32.

"Officers returned fire, killing two of the suspects on the spot. Another suspect was certified dead upon arrival at a hospital. Two more suspects were arrested, with one being critically wounded. He is under police guard at hospital."

Three unlicensed firearms with ammunition, seven cellphones, and an iPad were found in the suspects' possession.

One of the two arrested men would appear in the Bronkhorstspruit Magistrate’s Court on Friday on charges of murder, attempted murder, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
