Bloemfontein - A tied up dog, with only his head sticking out of a box, has been found in a truck on the border between South Africa and Lesotho.

The paws of the Africanis were tied and he was wrapped in plastic to prevent him from moving, Netwerk24 reported.

The owner of a transport company had apparently asked the truck driver to smuggle the dog from Lesotho to South Africa, said Reinet Meyer, a senior inspector at the SPCA in Bloemfontein.

The owner of the transport company and the truck driver will be charged with animal cruelty, Meyer confirmed.

"Customs officials had found the dog while searching the truck.

"The dog was confiscated and brought to the SPCA in Bloemfontein, where it is now in a safe environment.

"We are terribly shocked to see what some transport companies are doing to animals. It is unacceptable to transport an animal in such circumstances.

"We are viewing this in a very serious light and will do everything in our power to have the guilty parties brought to book," Meyer said.
