Johannesburg - The Hawks on Tuesday instructed an alleged mastermind behind an underground crystal meth lab in Pomona, east of Johannesburg, to hand himself over.

Captain Ndivhuwo Mulamu said the 45-year-old man has been given 24 hours to turn himself in or a warrant for his arrest will be issued.

This deadline was given after four men were arrested when members of the Hawks' serious organised crime unit, the South African Narcotics Enforcement Bureau and the Vaal Rand K9 unit raided a plot on Thomas Road in Pomona last week.

Chi-Yu Fan, 38, Chi-Chin Fan, 31, both Taiwanese nationals, and Mozambican duo Orcidio Sitoe, 29, and Peters Ngwenya, 26, are expected to apply for bail in the Benoni Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

They were remanded in custody on Monday.

Mulamu said police discovered a clandestine laboratory, worth an estimated R3m, where the suspects allegedly manufactured crystal meth.

"The four suspects were linked to the underground lab and were subsequently arrested. Police seized drugs, chemicals and drug manufacturing equipment," she said.

They are facing charges of manufacturing and dealing in drugs.
