Johannesburg - The 3-year-old boy thrown from the balcony of a Hillbrow flat after an eight-hour hostage drama is in critical condition at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, a spokesperson said on Thursday.

"The child is still in a critical condition in the intensive care unit," Lungiswa Mvumvu said.

"Doctors are monitoring him. They suspect that he suffered a head injury."

The boy's father threw him from their 6th-floor balcony on Wednesday, after he stabbed the mother and their 11-year-old son, police told News24.

Mvumvu said the mother was responding well to treatment and receiving trauma counselling.

The family had asked that their names not be made public.

She said the 11-year-old's aunt was looking after him.

Police Captain Tsekiso Mofokeng told News24 that the couple had a fight on Tuesday. The 33-year-old woman ran away and police were called.

They rescued the 11-year-old and sent a hostage negotiator in after they found the 41-year-old man threatening to throw his son off the balcony.

Negotiations went on into the night, but at 01:15 on Wednesday morning, the man flung himself and the toddler off the balcony.

"He threw the toddler from the balcony and he also jumped. He was certified dead on the scene."
