Traffic cop dragged after stopping vehicle in Rustenburg

Cape Town – A female traffic officer in Rustenburg was allegedly dragged for a few metres by a vehicle that she had wanted to declare unroadworthy, North West police said on Thursday.

The 46-year-old officer was apparently with her colleagues on Tuesday morning when she stopped a white Toyota Kombi for a routine check, said Sergeant Kealeboga Molale.

Upon inspection, she found certain defects and had to declare the vehicle unroadworthy.

"It is alleged that, while she was busy removing the licence disc from the windscreen of the vehicle, the driver of the vehicle drove off."

The officer was dragged until she fell down.

Molale said she suffered minor injuries and was said to be doing fine.

"Her colleagues gave chase and the suspect continued to drive recklessly until his vehicle got a tyre burst."

The man, also 46, was arrested about 06:45 on Tuesday for attempted murder, reckless and negligent driving, and resisting arrest.

He was expected to appear in the Rustenburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
