Pietermaritzburg - The 1000 Women, 1 Voice initiative is looking to change statistics relating to violence against women by mobilising South Africans against domestic violence.

At a women’s brunch in Durban yesterday, Tina Thiart, director of the Hendrik Gerryts Group (HGG), a financial service to businesses and NPOs, launched the 1000 Women’s Trust.

Thiart, who hosted the brunch at the Tsogo Sun Garden Court South Beach Hotel, welcomed the organisations and businesses to the launch of the Trust, which she said would look at making resources available to provide access to skills and leadership capacity building.

The Trust will also provide financial aid to women-led organisations that provide support to communities.

The initiative started in 2004 in Cape Town, with trustee and major role-player in the initiative, Wendy Ackerman, at the forefront.

In a press release from the Trust, Ackerman said they had already held 10 events in Cape Town, and now wanted to engage the rest of the country in the struggle against domestic violence.

“Being one of the founding members of the 1000 Women United Against Domestic Violence Initiative, I believe every South African should get involved in this initiative,” said Ackerman in the statement.

The initiative aims to cut across cultural, economic and class divides and provide a platform for women and men to stand together and to speak out against domestic violence, abuse and rape in local communities.
