Pretoria – A 34-year-old man was arrested in Mamelodi East for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and live ammunition, Gauteng police said on Thursday.

The man, who owns a supermarket in Marikana Extension 21 in Mamelodi was arrested on Wednesday following a tip-off, Constable Connie Moganedi said.

On arrival at his supermarket, officers found a small group of businessmen gathered in front of the shop, and conducted a search.

A firearm and live ammunition were found in the man's possession.

A case of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition was opened. The man would appear in the Mamelodi Magistrate’s Court soon, said Moganedi.

On Tuesday, police said a group of protesters had used live ammunition while trying to break into a shopping mall in Mamelodi.

Someone shot the padlock at the locked entrance to the mall, Colonel Noxolo Kweza said at the time.

Foreign-owned shops were also looted in Atteridgeville and 19 Autopax buses were burnt during the protests that started on Monday.

The unrest followed the ANC's decision to name Thoko Didiza as the party's Tshwane mayoral candidate for the August 3 local government elections.
