Durban – Two people suspected of involvement in housebreakings and car theft were killed in a shoot-out in Pietermaritzburg, the Hawks said on Sunday.

Officers followed a car in Montrose on Saturday morning and were led to a getaway vehicle, spokesperson Lieutenant Simphiwe Mhlongo said.

“The other suspects who were waiting in the getaway vehicle fired shots at the police, who returned fire in self-defence,” he said.

Two were shot dead and two were taken to hospital under police guard.

Officers recovered 12 computer boxes for various cars, a signal jamming device, a police radio, a crowbar, and three 9mm pistols with ammunition.

The injured suspects were arrested for attempted murder, attempted theft of a motor vehicle, possession of unlicensed firearms, and tools used to break into cars.

They would appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court once charged.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate attended the shooting scene and opened an inquest docket.
