Kagiso - Two brothers were each given 12-year prison sentences in the Kagiso Magistrate's Court for killing an IFP councillor, police said on Thursday.

They shot and killed Patrick Ngubane in his flat in Kagiso's Madala Hostel, on the West Rand, in July 2014, Warrant officer Solomon Sibiya said.

The killers were spotted in KwaZulu-Natal after their pictures were published in the Daily Sun newspaper.

He said the motive for the murders was never established.

Kagiso station commander Brigadier Sipho Ngubane applauded the investigators for working around the clock to secure a conviction.

"Your tireless efforts and burning desire to see justice done has paid off," he said.
