Two children perish in Durban river tragedy

Durban – A tragedy unfolded in Umlazi on Saturday as two children drowned in a river running through the south Durban area.

According to KwaZulu-Natal Emergency Medical Services, the incident occurred near Madiba Mbutho Road in the former township's V section.

Paramedics arrived to find the victims – an eight-year old girl and a nine-year old boy - had drowned while a third child was in a critical condition.

The boy (9) had managed to get out of the river before they arrived. He was transported to hospital.

The circumstances surrounding the incident is still unclear and police are investigating.
