Cape Town – Two men drowned when their commercial fishing boat capsized at the Kowie River mouth in Port Alfred on Saturday morning, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said.

It capsized with four men on board, while believed to be exiting the harbour mouth, said NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon.

The boat washed onto a sand bank in a strong rip current with three to four metre swells.

Two men, one being the skipper, were found safe on the beach.

They were taken to hospital in a stable condition and suffering from shock.

The third man's body was found on the beach.

Lambinon said an extensive sea and shoreline search took place to find the last man.

His body was eventually spotted floating semi-submerged in the water, about 50 metres offshore. He had been wearing his life-jacket.

All 4 fishermen of Hawaii are accounted for and they are all confirmed to be local commercial fishermen.

“NSRI commend the quick response by emergency services and to police who assisted by cordoning off the area, and to Willem Nel of the Ndlambe Municipality for his assistance in searching along the beach during this tragic accident.”

An inquest docket had been opened.
