Cape Town – Two men arrested for the rape and murder of Sinoxolo Mafevuka are expected to appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

Police Constable Noloyiso Rwexana described the arrest of the suspects aged 21 and 26 as a breakthrough in the case that has caused outrage around the country.

Mafevuka's half-naked body was found dumped in a public toilet a few minutes' walk from the shack where she lived with her brother.

According to reports, some of her clothing had been stuffed into the cistern.

Mafevuka's mother, Nowethu, told News24 on Monday that her daughter had dreamed of growing up to help her family improve their home.

She never talked about wanting to get married, her mother said.

"She was wonderful to me, she was my child. I never got any reports that she was anything but a good child," she said.

Her daughter always had a smile on her face, she said, and had respect for everyone in her neighbourhood.

The reward for information leading to the conviction of Mafevuka's killers reportedly stood at R100 000. It was unclear at this stage whether this played a part in the arrests.

Meanwhile, support has been pouring in for the family.

Hundreds of people have joined a group on Facebook created to raise awareness about Mafevuka, and crime in general.

The group, called "Sinoxolo, we have peace" has been working to raise more money to secure the conviction of Mafevuka's killers.

Police last week were criticised by Deputy Police Minister Maggie Sotyu for their handling of the case.

Officers only contacted the family for statements when Sotyu raised concerns about the low priority given to the case.
