Cape Town - Two people were killed while several others were injured in crashes in Cape Town on Saturday night and early Sunday morning.

ER24 spokesperson Chitra Bodasing in a statement said a woman was killed after her vehicle went off a bridge and down an embankment off Constantia Main Road at about 19:30.

“The car went about 25 metres down the embankment and caught alight. A tree had also fallen on the car,” she said.

Paramedics went down the embankment and extricated the woman from the vehicle.

“The woman, believed to be in her 50s, was assessed and found to have sustained critical injuries. Paramedics began treatment, however the woman's condition deteriorated.”

She died of her injuries.

“The fire was extinguished by the tree that fell on the car,” Bodasing said.

At about midnight, paramedics from ER24 as well as other emergency services responded to a pedestrian who had been knocked down on Borchards Quarry Road in Nyanga.

“It is understood that the patient, a man, was knocked down by a vehicle. Upon assessment by paramedics it was found that the man was in a critical condition.”

After being treated at the scene, the man was taken to hospital.

“The exact cause of the incident is unknown. The vehicle was not found on scene,” she said. At 03:00 on Sunday, paramedics responded to a scene in which a vehicle had gone down an embankment from Jakes Gerwel Drive, Philippi.

It was found on its roof and in flames on Old Lansdowne Road.

“It is understood that all patients, men, were ejected … [and were] found lying near the vehicle,” Bodasing said.

One person died.

“Two were in a critical condition and one sustained moderate injuries. These patients were treated and transported to hospital for further medical care.”

Fire and Rescue Services extinguished the fire.

All three incidents are being investigated by the authorities.
