Durban - Two people were killed in two separate shooting incidents at the infamous Glebelands hostel on Wednesday evening, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Thursday.

A 32-year-old man died upon arrival at hospital after he was shot several times in the head just after 20:00, Police spokesperson Thembeka Mbhele told News24.

The second victim, a 53-year-old woman, was killed roughly an hour later in her tuck-shop after two men approached her pretending to be customers.

The women died at the scene, Mbhele said. The exact circumstances surrounding the incidents were not immediately available.

Police investigations are underway and no arrests have been made.

An Amnesty International report states that 60 people were killed at the hostel between March 2014 and November 2016.

A subsequent Public Protector report found that poor rental control by the eThekwini Municipality was to blame for the high rate of murders in the residential complex.

The report highlighted the detention and torture of at least three Glebelands hostel residents by police officials in 2014.

On November 7, a Glebelands peace community leader was shot dead after leaving the Umlazi Magistrate's court. No-one was arrested for the murder, Amnesty International said.
