Johannesburg - Two security guards were shot when armed robbers hijacked a truck on the R21 in Boksburg, on the East Rand, on Wednesday, Gauteng police said.

Three armed men stopped a truck transporting cellphones at the Griffiths Road bridge, Captain Kay Makhubela said.

Armed security guards were escorting the truck.

A shootout ensued and two of the guards were wounded. The robbers left the scene with the truck.

It was recovered in Boksburg later and the three alleged hijackers were arrested.

Emer-G-Med spokesperson Max Cohen said the two officers were taken to hospital with moderate to serious gunshot wounds.

The three are expected to appear in the Boksburg North Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
