Cape Town – Two surfers rushed to the rescue of a 38-year-old woman who had been swept out to sea by a rip current at Noordhoek beach on Saturday.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said in a statement that the woman and her male friend were standing knee-deep in the water when the backwash of a strong rip current knocked her over and swept her out to sea. The friend ran to raise the alarm.

NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said the two local surfers paddled out to assist her. They loaded her onto one of the surfboards and kept her warm, covering her with a hoody. NSRI members then took her on board their sea rescue craft for the journey back to land.

The woman was treated for mild hypothermia and exhaustion and non-fatal drowning symptoms. She was later released into the care of her family.

Lambinon commended the two surfers for their efforts.
