Cape Town - The University of Cape Town on Friday said it welcomed the community service sanction imposed on three students in the Wynberg Magistrate's Court for contravening an interim interdict earlier this year.

Masixole Mlandu, Chumani Maxwele and Slovo Magida were charged after they entered the Bremner Building on May 25 without the vice chancellor’s permission, contravening the interdict.

UCT said in a statement that it was satisfied with the prosecutor’s diversion in the case on Tuesday, "as it includes an admission of guilt, recognition that a wrong was committed, and a sanction of community service".

The interdict was obtained in February following the campus Shackville protests in February, during which a shack was erected on upper campus as a symbol of the struggle for student housing and financial exclusions. UCT’s security services later demolished the structure.

News24 previously reported that the trio had appeared in court in connection with the burning of historic paintings during the protests.

However, the charges related to the interdict.

We apologise for the error.
