Pietermaritzburg - The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) has established a task team to investigate the insourcing and outsourcing of services on its five campuses.

In a statement on Tuesday UKZN spokesperson Lesiba Seshoka said the task team comprises students, human resources and labour representatives who will examine the feasibility of insourcing and outsourcing, taking into account aspects like affordability and sustainability.

The task team’s mandate extends to compiling and benchmarking information related to the following areas:

• Current cleaning, gardening and security staff members

• Personnel costs

• Equipment and maintenance costs

• The impact of salaries of old staff versus new staff

• The status of current tender processes and contracts in relation to services.

Seshoka said whilst the university is not facing any immediate action around outsourcing, it is nevertheless taking the initiative to put in place the relevant mechanisms in this regard.

“The work of the team is currently under way and it’s anticipated that they are expected to report to executive management with proposals soon.” — WR.
