Pretoria - Damian Treeby, a person of interest in the Anika Smit murder inquest, has found new legal representation, the Pretoria North Magistrate's Court heard on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Treeby's lawyer, Sunette Potgieter, withdrew from representing him due to "certain circumstances", and advocate Corrie Nieuwenhuys was appointed as his new legal representative.

"Certain circumstances surrounding my client have urged me to step aside as legal representation. I understand that he will be getting other legal aid," Potgieter told the court.

Treeby, who has been dubbed "Vampire" because of his name on messaging app, MXit, was previously a suspect in the matter.

He was back in the gallery on Wednesday, wearing a T-shirt and black pants, and looking relaxed.

Smit's parents were not present.

The matter has been postponed until July 19 and Treeby has been requested to be present.

Smit was found brutally murdered in her father's home on April 10, 2010, with her hands removed and a bottle sticking out from between her legs.
