Varsity Cup postponed for another week

2016-03-01 16:48

Johannesburg - Fans of the rugby Varsity Cup will have to contain their excitement for another week as fixtures have been postponed again, following recent protests at several universities.

The fixtures that were due to take place on Monday, February 29, were originally postponed for seven days, except for the final.

The latest postponement means the fixtures planned for March 7 would also not take place as planned.

"The Board of FNB Varsity Cup today announced that it has extended the postponement of all Varsity Cup fixtures to allow universities across the country the opportunity to address various challenges faced at their respective campuses," a statement on the Varsity Cup’s official page said.

"The well-being and safety of all students and those attending and participating in our events remains of the utmost importance," Varsity Cup CEO Duitser Bosman said.

The Board would meet weekly to review and monitor the developments at the various universities before any matches resume.

Last week on Monday, a Varsity Cup match between the University of the Free State (UFS) and Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University was disrupted when protesters and students swarmed the field and were attacked by spectators.

The protesters refused to leave the field and clashed with fans before the police and university security intervened.
