Johannesburg - Registered voters will soon be able to change their address on the Electoral Commission of SA's (IEC) website.

Netwerk24 reported on Wednesday that in the first phase of the process, the three million registered voters whose address was not on the voters' roll could add this information.

The IEC would send SMSes to voters. The intention was to have all registered voters check and update their address on the commission's website, possibly from August.

In June 2016, the Constitutional Court gave the IEC 18 months to rectify shortcomings in the voters' roll and problems with missing addresses.

Democratic Alliance representative in the IEC's liaison committee with political parties, Mike Moriarty, welcomed the move.

Previously, voters had to go to their nearest IEC office if they wanted to change their address.

The commission said in a statement that there were about 7.85 million voters whose addresses were not on the roll. They represented 32% of the country's 26 million registered voters.

Another 8.6 million voters' addresses were incomplete.
