Polokwane - The Limpopo government has appealed for calm in Vuwani after fresh violence erupted following the Municipal Demarcation Board's announcement that it would not review its decision to shift boundaries in the area.

Residents insist they would not be part of the Lim345 municipality into which they were incorporated from the Makhado municipality, community leader Chief Mmbangiseni Masia said on Tuesday.

Police were sent to the area on Monday, after the board rejected call to have its demarcation decision reversed.

Phuti Seloba, spokesperson for the inter-ministerial committee set up to restore calm to the area, said they noted the board's decision. Transparent and robust talks with affected residents would continue, he said.

Traditional leaders and residents had made submissions to the board have their area remain under the Makhado municipality.

In 2016, they protested for four months against the decision, burning about two dozen schools down.

The protests escalated in May, when residents lost a court bid to have the area remain under Makhado.

Eight communities opposed to the move had formed the Pro Makhado Forum.
