A Howick woman working on yachts in America is busy preparing on Thursday for the arrival of Hurricane Matthew in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Kim van Jaarsveld (20), who is docked at the Bahia Mar marina in Florida, said the hurricane was expected to hit the town late on Thursday night, with many people evacuating the area and moving inland away from the destruction of the huge storm.

Speaking to The Witness on Thursday afternoon, Van Jaarsveld said the captain of the yacht she was working on had told her that by lunch time yesterday (7.30 pm in South Africa) the crew would find the winds starting to pick up and rain was forecast to hit the town “properly” at 11 pm (5 am in South Africa) last night.

“We have had to prepare for this hurricane. We don’t quite know what we are going to get until it has hit us,” said Van Jaarsveld.

“At this point I’m not too scared, but I have never experienced the type of winds and rains that are expected.

“So for a strong category three, possibly a category four hurricane, this will be my first,” she said.

She said Fort Lauderdale seemed nervous but everyone was “as ready as we can be”, for the hurricane.

At the time of the interview, Van Jaarsveld said she and the crew were still stationed on the yacht and would be evacuated if the state thought they were not safe.

“At this point we won’t be getting the eye [of the storm]. We are getting the outskirts of it.

“If it gets to a point where we have to be evacuated, we will.”

She said the town was “very overcast” with lots of wind. It was also unusually dark for 7.30 am, she said.
