Warrant of arrest for Anwa Dramat after no-show in court

2016-08-19 14:58

Pretoria - A warrant of arrest has been issued for Anwa Dramat, former head of the Hawks.

The warrant was issued after Dramat failed to arrive in court on Friday.

His defence attorney, Victor Nkhwashu, said Dramat lived in Cape Town and had not attended court in order to save on travel costs.

Dramat's co-accused - Shadrack Sibiya, suspended Gauteng head of the Hawks, and Lesley Maluleke - did show up for the court case in Pretoria. The case has now been postponed until September 30.

The three former top officials of the Hawks earlier asked the police minister for financial assistance with their legal costs.

Nkhwashu said they had not yet received a reply from the police minister's legal department.

They are facing charges of organised crime, kidnapping, violations of the Immigration Act and obstruction of justice, following the extradition of Zimbabweans.

They are arguing that they acted in the performance of their duties and on behalf of the minister.

All three of them were released earlier on bail of R5 000 each.
