Polokwane - Polokwane is experiencing a severe water shortage, the municipality said on Saturday.

Water levels at all of the municipalities’ reservoirs were critically low and some were already empty, spokesperson Tidimalo Chuene said in a statement.

This followed a shutdown of supply by Lepelle Northern Water to allow for repairs of the Specon pipeline from the Olifantspoort plant.

"Repairs were completed by midnight on Thursday and normal pumping to Polokwane resumed immediately," said Chuene.

"The increased demand of water by consumers following the shutdown has made it difficult for reservoirs to fill up water enough for normal supply to resume in all areas."

He said some parts of the municipality had already reported a shortage or low water pressure.

Areas affected were Flora Park, Serala View, Sterpark, Bendor, Thornhill, Madiba Park, Legae la Batho, and parts of Seshego Zone 2, 3, 8 and 5.

Water tankers were being deployed and would move around the affected areas.

Water treatment plants in Dalmada along the R71 were open for consumers to get water between 06:00 and 22:00.

"The inconvenience caused by this service disruption is regrettable," said Chuene.
