Cape Town – South African authorities are working to secure the release of millions of rands from a cargo plane that had been impounded in Zimbabwe after a dead body was found on it.

A South African diplomat in Zimbabwe told SABC News the plane was carrying rand notes printed in Germany.

The Western Global Airlines plane was flying from Germany to King Shaka International Airport in Durban when the captain asked for a technical landing at Harare International Airport, Zimbabwe’s Herald newspaper reported.

While it was being refulled, airport officials found that there was blood dripping from the plane and when they went to check, they found the man’s body, Fin24 reported. The man’s identity and nationality are unknown.

The crew, including two Americans, a Pakistani and at least one South African, have been arrested, The Times newspaper reported.

The plane was carrying millions of rands belonging to the SA Reserve Bank.

Western Global Airlines said in a statement that the “Boeing MD-11 freighter aircraft is leased to Network Airline Management, a longtime customer based in the UK, and the shipment consignee was the South African Reserve Bank”.
