Bloemfontein - Just like the notorious American couple Bonnie and Clyde did in the 30s, a Welkom couple conned people wherever they went, before being arrested.

The Welkom duo, Danie Kock, 44, and his 49-year-old wife Stephanie appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

They were apprehended after allegedly getting a deposit of R16 695 from a Bloemfontein woman to install built-in cupboards. However, the job was never done, Netwerk24 reported on Wednesday.

The Hawks' Lieutenant Colonel Wimpie Steyn said during Stephanie Kock's bail application, that she was being investigated for similar cases in Jeffreys Bay, Da Gamaskop near Mossel Bay, Parkview in Johannesburg and in Welkom.

Her husband is also a person of interest in some of the cases. There are cases in Richards Bay and Scottsburg to which just he is linked.

Some of the cases which police closed after not being able to track down the two were in Melkbosstrand, Queenstown, Piet Retief and Pretoria North.

Some of these cases date as far back as 2004.

Steyn testified that their modus operandi was to pitch up at building sites and to ask if they can give them a quote for cupboards.

In Bloemfontein, they operated under the name Multi Projects. They also gave a fake address for the company.

When the quote is accepted, a deposit has to be paid into the account of their son, Daniël Johannes Kock. The money is then withdrawn.

Steyn said if things got too hot, they’d just take their clothes and flee in their car.

"They are constantly evading law enforcement and can’t be traced. They also stay in places where they can quickly pack their things and leave.

"They are like Bonnie and Clyde. They go from place to place and con people as far as they go."

He testified that chances are big that, should Stephanie be granted bail, she would turn to crime again to get money. She is used to fleeing and evading the law.

Danie dropped his bail application before the hearing got underway. Stephanie also dropped hers after Steyn's testimony.
